Contrary to what you may be led to believe by the media, the majority of students applying to college are mid-range students; students representing the 50th percentile of their graduating high school class. In his book, Finding the College That’s Right for You, John Palladino discusses mid-range student profiles and identifies 150 excellent match colleges. I found his research to be informative, especially with regard to his focus on the important characteristics of  colleges for students performing at this level. These include graduation rates, first year retention rates, total # of students, percentage of full time faculty, accreditations, percentage of transfer students, average class size, student/faculty ratios, support services- traits used in my own evaluation when considering college lists for mid-range students. No matter where you are in your college search, consider these characteristics as you develop or finalize college lists.
